The cheaper made train sets sold in department stores around Christmas are considered toys. These trains can also be used as model railroading. The sets are made on the same scale as higher priced model, with the track having the same gauge as the more expensive models. Some of these cheaper trains may not have as much detail as the higher price models. Also these cheaper trains probably don’t have the power and smoothness of the operation of the more expensive models. The earliest toy trains were made in the 19th century and were often made of cast iron. These trains were sometimes powered by real steam or could be powered by clockwork engines. A German company named Marklin, revolutionize the toy train industry. Most of these trains are considered toys, but some of them can be classified as models. Therefore; they are toy model trains.

Today’s model trains are very detailed and sophisticated. Most model trains from Z scale up through O scale are usually built on an exact scale to the real trains they represent. Where the Large Scale models are not built on the exact scale of the real trains they are still very popular. These large scale trains are considered toys more than models. However; the large scale trains are the most popular for Garden Railroads. You can model a very impressive outdoor layout using all the accessories and rolling stock available of the large scale trains.

The Z scale model trains are very small, but have great detail. The N scale is the second most popular mode scale and is about half the size of HO. HO scale is the most popular scale of model trains. Another popular gauge is O scale which was made popular by the Lionel manufacturing company. Most of the O scale trains run on a three rail track. All of these scale trains from N through O are considered model trains, but also can be called toys. So the difference between toy and model trains would be whichever one you want to call them. The main thing is to always have fun whether you are playing with toys are modeling a train layout.

Looking at the N gauge trains, we find out that the distance between the two rains is nine millimeters. The N in N scale stands for the nine in nine millimeters. But, this is gauge not scale. So now we know what the gauge is, let’s look at the scale. The scale of N scale trains is different according to the country the train is being modeled in.  The scale ranges from 1:148 to 1:160, but all run on a nine millimeter track gauge. In the United Kingdom the N scale is built on a ratio 1:148 to the prototype. Whereas, in the United States the N gauge train has a 1:160 scale ratio. The Japan the N gauge has a scale ratio of 1:150 and some modelers in Britain use a scale ratio of 1:152. So, when modeling in N scale always look at the ratio to keep all your train and accessories the correct scale. But, is you mix them up you probably would not know the difference.

The HO scale train has a track gauge of 16.5 millimeters. This scale is the most popular scale model train in the world. When modeling in HO scale you do not have to worry about different ratios, like in the N scale. The HO scale train has a standard ration of 1:87 world-wide.  The HO stands for half of O, which means that the HO scale is approximately one half the sizes of the O scale trains, which we will explore next.

The O scale is different in that it can have a track gauge from 31.75 to 32.64 millimeters. All O gauge trains will run on any of the tracks without any problem. The standard O scale track is considered to be 32 millimeters. Now let’s look at the scale of O gauge trains. The scale in the United Kingdom has a ratio of 1:43.5, where, 1:45 is the normal scale ratio in Europe. The United States uses the ratio of 1:48 scale ratio.

Now we take a look at the G scale trains. The only standard in this gauge is the track, having a track gauge of 45 millimeters called (Gauge 1). The scale of the G scale trains is another thing. The gauge is different form manufacturer to manufacturer and from country to country. Wrightway, Accucraft, Aster, Marklin, and MTH manufacturers make their model in a ratio of 1:32. Aristo-Craft and USA Trains “Ultimate” series is 1:29, whereas LGB, Bachmann’s “Big Haulers” series and the Gartland Locomotive Works builds their modes in ratio of 1:22.5. Also, there are many more manufacturers and scales. Therefore, the G trains should be called G gauge, with no particular scale. Let’s take a step back in time and explore the beginnings of the model train. Did you know their manufacture began in the Victorian period? Did you also know that, originally these trains were made in Germany? Their immediate popularity was a natural consequence of actual trains becoming a fashionable form of transportation. In fact, the first toy trains were, in reality, promotional tools.

“Carpet railways” (the first model trains) were made in 1840. There have been many innovations since that time, though those early trains are certainly collectibles and very valuable. These trains actually had “boilers” that produced steam and powered the train.

Since that time there have been many, many exciting developments in hobby trains. For instance, the early trains did not even run on a track nor were they made to scale. Now, not only do they run on tracks but they have standard gauges and they have been made entirely to scale.

The company that led the way in standardizing the tracks was Marklin Company. This innovation allowed a large variety of trains to run on a track. These first gauges were designated “one, two, three”. This great achievement was followed by the creation of the “O” gauge. This opened up the door for great expansion, not only for the manufacture of trains, but in terms of different accessories as well.

With the advanced technology that the 20th century afforded the evolution of hobby trains took off. Marklin introduced ranges and scales which would change the world of toy trains forever. This innovation spread to Great Britain and Germany like wildfire.

Though the impetus of toy trains was actually a promotional tool for salesmen, the popularity of this hobby grew even as trains as a transportation diminished.

The technology of the 20th century generated the development of remote controls for signs and lighting, signal switches and even train operators. In addition, both N and Z gauges (for smaller trains) were introduced as well as the G gauge for larger scales.

Today, you can even get software to help you design your layout. Now there is computerized technology that sets your train on a certain course and let’s off steam or make train sounds which all add to your enjoyment. There have been a plethora of changes over the years, this is just a glimpse.

You may wonder why hobby trains are as popular, or more, than ever. Well there are many reasons: a person may have an interest in the history of trains themselves, they may enjoy creating the environment around the trains themselves, or they may just like going down memory lane to their childhood. But one reason is universal…it’s just plain fun!
